Nigeria: Minister Johnson’s advice to new IT agency

From Abuja, Nigeria, the Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, this week called on members of the newly formed National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), to focus on ways for local IT companies to grow.

A report posted on Vanguard identifies members of the NITDA board and includes Chairman Dr. Tosin Ajayi, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Science and Technology, Communication Technology and Education, the Standards Organization of Nigeria and Nigeria Society of Engineers, amongst others.
Minister Johnson urged members to work together to formulate the best strategies to achieve the Agency’s objectives.

She was quoted as saying, “ICT is the heart of global economies and Nigeria is no different. We are committed to leveraging on the tools of ICT for the socio economic development of this country and the inauguration of this Board today is a quantum leap in that direction.”

Noting that the Board featured only one female member, the Minister bemoaned the low inclusion of women in the ICT sector.

Board Chairman Ajayi reiterated the commitment of the Agency to “exploiting the benefits of IT for the greater good of the country.”
